Create World

Media definitely influences our lives, and creates a world that we inhabit. The youth definitely encompass media into their world. What the media tells them to do they do. What the media tells them is cool, they need and want. Magazines and commercials are huge factors in the world we live in today. People get so consumed in the stories the media throws out. People are all so obsessed with getting the next and newest product out there. That has all to do with the media. It will go on and tell about the world’s newest product and make poeple feel like they need to have it or else they are not keeping up with the rest of the world. Media tells the people how to dress and what to look like. And people just go along with whatever it says. Media targets mostly youth, one because they are the next generation and two because they are gullible. Like I said before media tells people how to look, and most teenagers want to be in the normal, so they think what the media is telling them is the normal. For example, media is constantly giving teenage girls the message that they need to have a perfect body. Media sends this message every time a girl opens up a magazine or flips on the TV and see's this perfect woman having not one flaw. Well because that is being put into their heads, as a result if a teenage girl does not look that way, then they will feel inferior. Thus creating low self esteem and eating disorders. This happens to be a problem among the youth. Media, such as magazines, and commercials gives out messages to people, and the people follow what it says. I think people, especially young people pay more attention to media than anything else in the world, and let it influence their lives way more than it should.

  1. Great example, Max. Eating disorders are an interesting (and sad) way to think about "world creating."

Here's a suggestion: upload an image! This would be a great addition -- maybe an example of a magazine that create unrealistic standards of beauty.

  2. Good job talking about the way the media portrays body image, especially for teenage girls. This is becoming so much of a problem that they are creating ads to show how a lot of the super skinny girls are Photoshoped. Do you think this is creating a world that has negative impacts on society?

  3. Nice job showing how the media "creates" a world for others and how much we listen to the media. The idea of a false body image is a very prevalent one and the media creates many worlds like how celebrities act and whether that's right.

  4. Really great points, Max. I think it would be interesting to imagine a world without media influences... Would teenagers still feel pressured to be super skinny and keep up with the latest trends? I think that the media definitely influences what people see as beautiful, but also leads to false expectations. For the most part, magazines and ads Do a lot of editing to photos to make it seem like the models are super human. By targeting teenagers (as you mentioned) they try to achieve this image that is almost impossible. I think it is very sad and wish that the media did to edit photos and did not only use super skinny models because it hurts teenagers self esteem.
